Erin's Garden Journal—July 19, 2015

July 15, 2015
This Wednesday was our first Garden Together night, a time between 6:30 and 7:30 p.m. on Wednesdays when our gardeners can come together to work socially. 6 attendees.

Harvest:
  • 1 large zucchini
  • 1 orange cherry tomato
 Notes:
  • Cherry tomato in SW corner is definitely orange when ripe
  • Microgreens seem to have low germination. Will keep an eye on them, plant more between rows if none show up soon.
  • Weather hasn't been ideal for growing from seed, in spite of daily watering. I'll start stopping by every morning to water just the seeds before work, to make sure they get enough.
  • Sage is thriving outrageously. Wonder if the food bank can use it if?

Task accomplished:
  • Brenda brought 5 tomato cages earlier today
  • Trees around perimeter pruned
  • Thorough weeding
  • Thorough watering
  • Seeds planted:
    • More greens (square bed)
    • Yellow wax beans (sheet mulch bed)
    • Sugar snap peas (sheet mulch bed
    • Potatoes (west half barrel)
July 19, 2015
  • Weather this week has been much better for growing: heavy rain on Friday, hot sun on Saturday and Sunday. The peas I planted a while ago finally put on some growth (only 2 plants germinated, though)
Harvest:
  • 1 tiny red cherry tomato
  • 4 large squash for Glen Rhodes Food Bank (we thought they were odd-looking zucchini at first, but a member's research turned up a more likely candidate: cousa)
Tasks accomplished:
  • Tidied garbage
  • Watered seeds
  • Installed final rain barrel diverter
    • Dispensing hose was missing, so I capped all outlets on the diverter for now. We can't harvest water until new hose is ordered, but at least the installation is done and all else is ready to go.
