Erin's Garden Journal—August 3, 2015

July 20, 2015

3rd day of hot, humid weather. Yesterday's predicted storm turned into just a brief shower.

Squashes have outgrown hugel mound. Mowing grass must be difficult—sorry!

Strange yellow fungus appeared overnight. Looks like spray foam insulation. Shrivelled and dried by afternoon, but new (wet) splatter nearby.

UPDATE: Looked up fungus. Is a kind of "slime mold"—not harmful, possibly helpful. It likes wood mulch and humidity.

Bush beans (Urban Harvest) are budding.

Had noticed a plant looking like a hollyhock in rectangular low raised bed. Today it bloomed Still looks like a hollyhock, but so do some shrub-like plants in nearby yards.

Squash plants starting to rest their fruits on top of worm composter, as if they are offering them to us.

1st sprouts appearing for newly planted lettuce mixes.

Stopped to water seeds on my way off for a week-long vacation. Lots of tomatoes in bloom, some with unripe fruit.

Tomatoes in raised beds are so bushy they are now shading out carrots

Worried about heat wave during vacation, but came home to a well-watered garden. Thanks, team! It's wonderful to be able to rely on people.

Harvested:
  • A dozen bush beans
  • A small baggie of mixed greens
  • 1 orange cherry tomato
Rest of bush beans will need to be harvested shortly. Yum!

Reports from missed week:
  • 11 squash given to food bank, 3 to volunteers
  • Pale spots on squash leaves a concern. Powdery mildew?
  • Getting harder to water the squashes, since you have to reach up and over the hugel mound. Maybe we can rig up something to make it easier?
  • A few radishes and tomatoes harvested
  • 3 attendees at Garden Together Night. Heat was oppressive, so they stuck to weeding and watering.
