Erin's Garden Journal - August 3–14

This update is actually not all from my journal. While I was away for a few weeks, other members emailed me updates. They were mostly about harvests, which was pretty exciting!

Sunday August 14, 2016

Six volunteers

Notes:

  • We finally had a drenching rain yesterday after a brutally hot, humid week. Hot and humid again today, but at least the garden is happy. Exuberantly so. Trying to control some of the wild growth that appeared while I was away (looking at you, tomatoes and squashes and melons!)
  • Some orange spots on a pear tree - concerning. Must keep an eye on it. Pear rust is a possible problem.

Tasks:

  • Collected our first seeds: cosmos, dill, and arugula
  • Thinned the cosmos, which are taller than I am and were flopping over the beet/lettuce/turnip polyculture.
  • Added brown leaves to the composter and started a new active compartment—the left side has as much food in it as the worms can handle for now.

Harvested, mostly for food bank:

  • Arugula - 0.4 kg
  • Lettuce - 0.1 kg
  • Tomatoes - 0.8 kg
  • Cucumber - 2.1 kg
  • Squash - 2.3 kg
  • Watermelon - 1.3 kg
  • Herbs - 0.4 kg

Sadly, though the watermelon sounded ready and had been gnawed on by some critters, it was not quite ripe. The whole inside was the colour, texture, and taste of the white bit that usually sits between the melon you eat and the rind. It was edible, but not really the experience we were looking for.

4 volunteers

Tasks completed:

  • Watered
  • Thinned squash, tomato, and melon growth. This is hard to do when they are all tangled together. In future, must train all volunteers to show plants tough love before this stage.

Harvested:

  • Herbs - 0.05 kg
  • Cucumbers - 0.535 kg
  • Peas - 0.02 kg
  • Green Beans - 0.169 kg
  • Tomatoes - 0.3 kg

3 Volunteers

Notes:
  • Recent rain has done wonders - for veggies and for weeds
  • Tomatoes are just starting to ripen
  • Peas and beans have gone wild
  • Something (insects? slugs?) is eating the leaves of the peas, but leaving the pods

Tasks Completed:
  • Watered
Harvested:
  • Cucumber
  • Peas
  • Beans
