Open House

Big thanks to those volunteers who came out to support our Open House. This event is our way of showing the community what our permaculture garden is all about, how it works what we grow, and an opportunity to highlight our mission to grow food and grow community through permaculture.

Sheilah led more than a dozen visitors on tours of our garden while our regular Garden Together volunteers were actively demonstrating harvesting, watering, weeding and all that gets the garden running the permaculture way.

Lowell Lo, a garden volunteer, who is also a local architect and urban agriculture designer, was on hand to display his project for repurposing plastics for seedlings. He also touched on creating and using rain-barrels and sub-irrigation.

Collecting and using rainwater is a big part of permaculture gardening. Garden@Kimbourne as many of you know has six rain barrels stationed along the west side of the garden. We collect the rainwater and use it to water the plants whenever it’s available, rather than using city water from our hose. We also practice ground-level irrigation with a system of tubes lining our beds in the main lasagna garden, allowing water to flow directly to our crops. Visitors taking our garden tours had the opportunity to see what this looks like first hand.

Garden@Kimbourne thanks all those who came out to support the Open House. We hope that you enjoyed yourself. Keep growing food and keep growing community.
